NIE–DNI concordance certificate: how to obtain and use it

Show that your former NIE and new DNI belong to the same person, then update records without losing cases or contracts.

The concordance certificate confirms that the NIE you used as a foreign national and the DNI issued after acquiring Spanish nationality belong to the same person. It helps when a public body, bank or company cannot link the records automatically.

Information reviewed on 27 August 2026. The Police provide the service at specific offices, but do not publish one national page promising identical documents, appointments and turnaround everywhere. Confirm your office’s instructions before paying or travelling.

1. Decide whether you need it

It does not replace the DNI or update every database automatically. Request it when an organisation still holds your NIE, creates a duplicate profile or asks for formal evidence linking both identifiers.

Before booking another appointment, ask the unit issuing your first DNI whether it can provide the concordance or explain the local route. If an organisation accepts your DNI, old TIE and its own evidence of the change, the certificate may not be necessary for that particular update.

2. Find the right office

Use the official Police office finder and check that the office lists DNI–NIE concordance certificates among its services.

If your province requires an appointment, look for the Police option covering residence, non-residence or concordance certificates. The name and availability vary by province; a DNI or fingerprint appointment does not guarantee service for this certificate.

3. Confirm documents and fee

Prepare as a base:

  • valid DNI and a copy;
  • old TIE, EU registration certificate or another document showing the NIE, if retained;
  • copies or receipts connecting the NIE to your records if the card was surrendered;
  • appointment confirmation and contact details;
  • sufficient authority if the office permits a representative.

The Police use form EX-15 for NIE and certificates. Confirm whether your office requires it for concordance and what reason to enter. The official 790 code 012 generator includes “certificates or reports issued at the applicant’s request” and calculates the current amount from the quantity. Do not reuse an old fee form or guess a similar category.

4. Check the certificate

Before leaving, verify:

  • full name;
  • current DNI;
  • former NIE;
  • any personal-data variation that must be linked;
  • date, issuing body and verification code or signature.

Ask for any error to be corrected immediately. Keep the original and a readable digital copy; provide copies unless an organisation needs to inspect the original.

5. Update public records first

Work in groups and keep evidence:

  1. Tax Agency: the AEAT explicitly says a change from NIE to DNI must be reported with form 030 and evidence of the change.
  2. Social Security: Importass has a dedicated “Cambiar NIE por DNI” service. Afterwards, check that employment history, affiliation and benefits remain in one profile.
  3. Regional and municipal services: healthcare, population register, education, social services and professional registers as relevant.
  4. Employment and mobility: employer, SEPE, driving licence and vehicles. Verify the result even if another authority shares data.
  5. Private organisations: banks, insurers, utilities, phone providers, rent, mortgage and identity-verified platforms.

Do not open a new account when the organisation can correct the identifier on the existing one. Ask it to preserve history, transactions, contracts and obligations linked to the NIE.

6. Review digital identity

DNIe, Cl@ve and electronic certificates have separate lifecycles. Do not revoke an NIE-based certificate until you know how to complete open procedures. Test access with the new DNI, update registration where required and download outstanding receipts.

If one system still shows the NIE, do not assume every record is wrong. Databases may synchronise at different times. Provide the concordance certificate and request an identity-data correction, not a duplicate registration.

Local and organisational differences

The competent office, appointment, extra documents, applicable fee and turnaround can vary. Each organisation may also accept different evidence for its update. Record the procedure name, date, receipt and answer received.

Ready when

  • You have a valid DNI and readable evidence of the former NIE.
  • The Police confirmed the applicable office, appointment, form and fee.
  • The certificate correctly links NIE, DNI and personal details.
  • AEAT and Social Security show the DNI without duplicating your history.
  • Priority organisations have confirmed the change.
  • You retain a list of pending updates and evidence for each completed one.

Next step

Use the complete checklist of organisations where you should change NIE to DNI and record the outcome of each update.
