Where to change NIE to DNI after acquiring Spanish nationality

A priority checklist for tax, Social Security, employment, healthcare, DGT, banks and digital access without duplicating your history.

Reviewed on 27 August 2026Official sources verified

After the DNI is issued, the NIE does not disappear from every database at once. Your goal is not to create new profiles, but to replace the identifier while preserving seniority, cases, contributions, contracts and transactions.

Checklist reviewed on 27 August 2026. Only the Tax Agency, Social Security and some other bodies publish a specific route. Healthcare, local registration, employment and private organisations use their own procedures; confirm channel and documents first.

Before you start

Prepare a paper and digital folder containing:

  • valid DNI;
  • NIE–DNI concordance certificate if held or requested;
  • old TIE, EU registration certificate or copies showing the NIE;
  • affiliation, customer, case, policy or contract numbers;
  • proof of every request and response.

Track organisation, channel, date, result and pending action. Do not send more personal data than needed, and avoid ordinary email for the DNI when a secure channel exists.

Priority 1: tax, contributions and income

Tax Agency

The AEAT requires the switch from NIE to DNI to be reported with form 030 and supporting evidence. Afterwards, check census data and confirm that earlier returns, debts, refunds and notifications remain available.

Social Security

In Importass choose “Cambiar NIE por DNI”. Then review employment history, affiliation number, registrations and benefits. If there are two profiles or missing records, request a correction before starting another procedure.

Employer, self-employment and benefits

Notify HR or your accountant so payroll, contract, withholding and contributions use the DNI. If self-employed, review invoicing, mutual insurance and adviser authorisations. If receiving benefits or registered as a jobseeker, check both SEPE and the regional employment service.

Priority 2: healthcare and local administration

Health card

Each autonomous community manages its health card even though the national CIP-SNS is unique. Request the change through your health service and confirm it does not create a new medical record or detach prescriptions, appointments and reports.

Municipal register and services

Ask your town hall how to update the identity document in the padrón. Also review local benefits, taxes, resident parking, libraries, childcare and any other municipal service you use.

Education and professional registers

Update universities, schools, credential recognition, professional bodies, grants and open cases. Ask them to retain qualifications, seniority and internal numbers.

Priority 3: driving, banks and contracts

DGT and vehicles

Police and DGT have an automated exchange when the first DNI is processed, but verify the outcome in miDGT. DGT also publishes a change-of-data duplicate route that expressly includes NIE to DNI. Check driving licence, vehicles, notification address, fines and points.

Banks, investments and insurance

Use each organisation’s identified channel. Ask it to change the document on the existing customer profile so accounts, cards, loans, mortgage, investments, insurance and beneficiaries retain their history. Check the tax name on certificates and avoid a second profile.

Housing and utilities

Review rent or ownership records, community fees, electricity, water, gas, telecoms, alarms and payment services. A contract need not be remade when a data update is enough; keep confirmation.

Priority 4: digital identity and signatures

Test Cl@ve with the new DNI and update the registration if it does not link your identity. An FNMT certificate contains identifying data, so obtain one based on the DNI for future use. Do not revoke the former certificate until receipts are downloaded and you know how to finish open procedures; revocation makes it invalid.

Also check regional portals, citizen folders, notification inboxes and saved signatures. Acceptance of the DNI on login does not prove all older cases have migrated.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not destroy the TIE, copies or concordance evidence before all updates are complete.
  • Do not create a new account when the existing one can be corrected.
  • Do not assume AEAT, Social Security, DGT and healthcare synchronise with each other.
  • Do not surrender the only original certificate without a receipt.
  • Do not close a support case until history and documents are checked, not just the visible name.

Ready when

  • AEAT shows the DNI and retains tax history.
  • Social Security has one affiliation number and complete employment history.
  • Payroll, benefits and professional records use the DNI.
  • Healthcare retains medical history, prescriptions and appointments.
  • DGT, banks and priority contracts are verified.
  • Cl@ve and the certificate you will use now work with the DNI.
  • Every change has a date, receipt and verified outcome.

Keep a controlled record

Retain the NIE → DNI folder for several years because rarely used contracts or old cases may reappear. Review the inventory again if a notice arrives under the NIE or identification fails.

Next step

Set up your digital identity with the guide to obtaining an FNMT certificate for the new DNI without first losing access to procedures opened with the NIE.
