If a Spanish driving licence or vehicles remain linked to your NIE after you obtain the DNI, the DGT has one dedicated process to connect both identifiers. It updates your record, issues a replacement driving licence and changes the vehicles registered in your name.
Information reviewed on 27 August 2026. This is the NIE-to-DNI process after Spanish nationality, not a vehicle transfer or automatic exchange of a foreign licence.
What the process changes
The DGT says the request updates your traffic record, produces a replacement Spanish driving licence, associates vehicles formerly recorded under the NIE with the DNI, generates updated vehicle registration certificates and posts the documents to the address you provide.
The expiry date does not restart. A duplicate for a personal-data change is free, and the vehicle owner does not change.
Check that this route applies
Use it if, before NIE became DNI, you had a valid Spanish driving licence or a vehicle registered in your name in Spain. If the Spanish licence has expired, request renewal rather than a duplicate. If you only have a foreign licence, Spanish nationality does not automatically convert it; check the exchange rules for the issuing country and your residence when it was obtained.
Prepare
Have the valid DNI and support number, full former NIE, current Spanish driving licence, NIE–DNI concordance certificate, vehicle registrations you expect to see, current contact details and Cl@ve, DNIe or a digital certificate.
With consent, the DGT checks the NIE–DNI link with the Police. Without consent, the online flow cannot continue and the request must be made in person.
1. Use the dedicated NIE-to-DNI duplicate
Choose “Duplicado por cambio de NIE a DNI”, not the generic lost or stolen document service. Online:
- Confirm whether you act personally or as a representative and review email, phone and postal address.
- Enter the DNI support number, former NIE and Traffic Office, then authorise the Police check.
- Review, submit and save the receipt.
The address matters because the definitive licence and updated vehicle documents are sent there. You may keep the existing address, choose the padrón address or provide another contact address.
2. In-person route
Book a DGT appointment and take the official form marked as a duplicate for changed data, original valid licence, current DNI or passport, evidence linking NIE and DNI unless you authorise the electronic check, and a 32 × 26 mm photo if requested.
The DGT says it reuses a photo already held since November 2024, while its in-person checklist still mentions one. Follow the current appointment instructions. A representative needs formal authority or the DGT authorisation form.
3. Treat the temporary licence carefully
After verification, the DGT provides temporary authorisation while the final document is posted. The replacement keeps the original expiry date. General DGT guidance limits a provisional licence to driving in Spain; for travel abroad, wait for the definitive card or confirm the requirements first. The published normal delivery estimate is about six weeks, not a guarantee.
4. Verify the driver record
In miDGT, check names, DNI, licence categories, points, restrictions and expiry. Download the current driver-data report, which reflects the Driver and Offender Register on the day of issue.
If history is empty, duplicated or has lost categories or points, do not create a new record. Report the issue with the submission receipt and both identifiers.
5. Verify every vehicle
The DGT explicitly says no separate vehicle procedure is needed: the NIE-to-DNI request associates your vehicles with the DNI and generates updated registration certificates.
Use miDGT or the “vehicles in my name” report to check every registration, holder, administrative status, ITV and restrictions. Do not request a transfer because ownership has not changed. The ITV technical card has separate procedures and is not listed by the DGT as needing a duplicate solely for NIE→DNI.
Leased, rented or company vehicles may not be registered in your name; notify the legal owner instead.
6. Keep address and third-party records separate
NIE→DNI does not replace an address change. If you moved, the DGT requires you to update within 15 days both the notification address and each vehicle’s tax address. Update the email and phone used for the Dirección Electrónica Vial as well.
Traffic does not automatically update your insurer, roadside assistance, finance provider, municipal vehicle tax, parking permits, toll apps or professional authorisations such as ADR, CAP and tachograph cards. Notify each responsible organisation securely; ADR has its own DGT duplicate procedure.
Common problems
- The service cannot link the identifiers: recheck NIE and DNI support number; use an in-person appointment with concordance if needed.
- The licence expired: use renewal and ask the DGT how to include the identity change.
- A vehicle is missing: obtain the vehicles-in-my-name report and open an incident, not a transfer.
- The old address remains: update notification and vehicle tax addresses separately.
- You must drive abroad: do not rely on the Spanish provisional document without confirmation.
- You only hold a foreign licence: use the applicable exchange process.
Recommended order
- Obtain DNI and concordance where possible.
- Check postal address, email and phone.
- Submit the dedicated DGT NIE-to-DNI request.
- Save the receipt and temporary authorisation.
- Verify driver, points and vehicles in miDGT/reports.
- Receive and check the physical licence and registration certificates.
- Update address, insurance, vehicle tax and external authorisations where applicable.
Ready when
- the DGT identifies the record by DNI without losing NIE history;
- the final licence has correct details, categories, points and expiry;
- every vehicle is associated with the DNI;
- updated registration documents have arrived or their delivery is tracked;
- notification and vehicle tax addresses are correct;
- external organisations have confirmed the identity change.
