The safest way to prepare your file is not to request every document at once. First confirm which exams and documents apply to you, then work backwards from a target filing date.
This guide provides a practical sequence, not legal advice. Your exact documents depend on your circumstances and on the country issuing each certificate.
1. Confirm the route and exceptions
Check that nationality by residence is the right route, when you complete the qualifying period and whether you need the CCSE, DELE A2 or a waiver. Do not book an exam or request foreign certificates until you know what your application must prove.
2. Resolve the exams first
If they apply, allow time for the CCSE and DELE sitting, results and a possible retake. A passed CCSE certificate is valid for four years. A DELE diploma has indefinite validity. It therefore usually makes sense to resolve the exams before ordering time-sensitive foreign certificates.

3. Build a document inventory
Split the list into Spanish records the authority may consult, documents you must upload, foreign documents and evidence specific to your case. For each item record the issuer, issue date, translation, legalisation or apostille, and the official source confirming the requirement.

4. Request time-sensitive documents last
Your passport and residence documentation must be valid where required. Do not assume one universal validity period for birth, criminal-record or other certificates: check the Ministry requirement, the issuing authority’s wording and any rule applying to the country of origin.
Arrange the sworn translation and legalisation or apostille for the final version. A later correction may require those steps to be repeated.
5. Prepare the filing
Pay the fee through the current channel, test Cl@ve, your digital certificate and AutoFirma, and make sure every file is complete and readable. The Electronic Office states that an online draft that has not been signed and submitted is deleted automatically two months after it is created.
6. Run the final review
Compare names, dates and document numbers. Confirm that the CCSE will still be valid on the planned filing date, that evidence for any exception is present and that every foreign document has the translation and legalisation it requires.
Exceptions and differences
Waivers, minors, applicants needing support, refugees, reduced residence periods and representation require specific evidence. The legalisation route for a foreign document varies by country and applicable treaty; confirm it with the issuer and the relevant Spanish official source.
