The electronic DNI stores authentication and signing certificates on its chip. To use them you need the physical card, valid certificates, the PIN and a compatible reader. MiDNI and an FNMT certificate are separate tools.
Information reviewed on 27 August 2026. The PIN can only be changed or unblocked physically at a DNI self-service update point (PAD). Police say no appointment is required for the PAD, although access and opening hours depend on the office.
1. Keep the envelope from the first DNI
When the DNI is issued, a random PIN is provided in a sealed envelope. Do not share or photograph it. If you do not know it, avoid repeated guesses because incorrect attempts can block access.
The PIN unlocks the chip keys; it is not the password for Cl@ve, MiDNI, FNMT or your phone.
2. Change or recover the PIN at a PAD
Take the physical DNI to an issuing office with a Punto de Actualización.
If you know the current PIN
- Insert the DNI into the PAD reader as shown.
- Choose the PIN-change option.
- Enter the current PIN and then a new, unpredictable one.
- Confirm and remove the card only when instructed.
If it is unknown or blocked
The PAD can restore access after fingerprint verification. Follow the terminal to set a new PIN. If the fingerprint cannot be verified or the machine fails, request staff assistance; a home reader cannot perform this recovery.
3. Check the chip certificates
At the PAD, open the DNI information and review certificate status. The physical card may remain valid while its electronic certificates need renewal.
To renew, select the option, confirm the PIN and provide a fingerprint when asked. Police say the process takes about five minutes. Do not remove the DNI until it finishes, as doing so could make the card unusable.
Renewal is not available online and requires physical presence. Staff must assist if the PAD cannot read the fingerprint.
4. Prepare the computer
Download drivers and modules only from the official DNIe download area for your Windows, macOS or Linux version. Avoid third-party packages.
You may use:
- a compatible card reader attached to the computer;
- an Android NFC phone with DNIeRemote and the supported official desktop app;
- another setup expressly supported by the official service you are using.
Restart the browser or computer if required. Keep the operating system, browser and AutoFirma updated from official sources.
5. Run a safe test
Open an official site supporting DNIe / electronic certificate, insert the card and first choose its authentication certificate. Check your correct name and DNI without submitting anything.
Then test signing only with a sample document or official verifier. The signing certificate may ask for the PIN again. Never approve a signature without seeing the text, organisation and action being authorised.
PIN security
- Avoid dates, phone numbers, sequences and parts of the DNI.
- Memorise it and keep it separate from the card.
- Shield the keypad when entering it.
- Change it at a PAD if someone may know it.
- If the DNI is lost or stolen, report it and follow the official process; changing a PIN does not recover a missing card.
Office and device differences
The DNIe system governs PIN and renewal, but the number of PAD machines, access, hours and staff assistance vary. Home compatibility depends on operating system, reader, browser and service. Separate a PIN problem from a software problem.
